What Is a Devil Fruit in One Piece
A devil fruit is a peculiar and mysterious fruit that endows those who consume it with superhuman strength and abilities. Although the exact number of devil fruits is unknown, there are more than 100 devil fruits spread out across the world. Each of them has a distinct power, and none of them has duplicates. Moreover, those who eat the devil fruit and gain superpowers are referred to as devil fruit users.
If you remember, Shanks once mentioned that devil fruits are considered to be the incarnation of the sea devils by many people. But we have since learned what devil fruits actually are and how they work, thanks to Dr. Vegapunk. Read more details in the next section.
There is a certain way the devil fruit power system works in this world or you can even call it rules that apply to a devil fruit user. They are:
The Origin of Devil Fruits
The precise history of the devil fruit’s origin hasn’t been revealed in the manga or anime just yet. However, in manga Chapter 1069, Dr. Vegapunk recently shared a brief explanation of the history of the devil fruits. Although he claims it to be his own theory, it appears to be the most plausible explanation we have seen in years for the unknown origin of devil fruits. So according to Dr. Vegapunk, devil fruits are the manifestation of the dreams/ desires/ wishes/ hopes of people for the evolution of mankind.
The devil fruit users with power also reside in a different dimension, according to Vegapunk. Their powers were only a dream of individuals who lived before them. When someone consumes a devil fruit, their lineage factor is altered, which gives them superhuman powers. Those with the powers are regarded as artificial or unnatural, and mother nature (which he refers to as the sea) hates them. You can now see why the sea is a devil fruit user’s ultimate weakness.
When Was a Devil Fruit Shown in Anime for the First Time?
The first time we saw a devil fruit was in the fourth anime episode (the first manga chapter) of One Piece. It was Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi devil fruit.
The details about the first devil fruit user are unknown, but they will be revealed soon as we are getting to know more about devil fruits. As of now, we only know that the oldest devil fruit user is Toki (Wife of Kozuki Oden). Her devil fruit was Toki Toki no Mi (Time-Time Fruit), which granted her the ability to time travel herself or even others but only forward in time.
Appearance of Devil Fruits in One Piece
The devil fruits are similar to the normal fruits but they come in different colors, weird shapes and sizes, and have specific swirl patterns on them. Each devil fruit is different from the other as there are no duplicates. But as we will discuss below, we have seen artificial devil fruits in the story as well. They look similar to the real ones and also come in different colors with circular patterns. All these distinct devil fruits are scattered throughout the seas, and with their difference in shape and rarity, one can easily distinguish the devil fruits from normal fruits.
The devil fruits have been classified based on the type of powers the user gets and the nature of these powers. There are three main types of devil fruits, namely Zoan, Logia, and Paramecia. We have shared detailed information about each of them here:
Zoan
The user can change into an animal by eating a devil fruit of the Zoan variety. This enables the user to access all of the abilities of that particular species with the help of devil fruit.
The Zoan devil fruits type can further be divided into four sub-types, and we will explain them all in brief here:
Ancient – This type of Zoan devil fruit allows the user to transform into an ancient animal that went extinct such as a dinosaur. The extinct species possess more strength than regular Zoan fruits. For example – X Drake’s Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Allosaurus devil fruit enabled him to transform into a dinosaur.
Mythical – Mythical Zoan devil fruits are the rarest type of devil fruits in the entire world as they allow the user to transform into mythological creatures like a Phoenix, Dragon, Eight-headed snake, and more. The mythical Zoan fruits also grant special powers and abilities to the users. For example – Marco’s Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix devil fruit enabled him to transform into a phoenix and gave him special powers. The flames he generated could heal him during the battle.
Artificial – These Zoan devil fruits were first seen in the Punk Hazard arc when Momonusuke ate an artificial devil fruit made by Dr. Vegapunk. This transformed him into a dragon-like Kaido. Later, we learned that Caesar and Doflamingo created artificial devil fruits called SMILEs, which were seen throughout the Wano arc. These devil fruits only had a 10% success rate and were weak compared to the real Zoan devil fruits.
Logia
Logia devil fruits are the rarest among the three main types of devil fruits. It gives the user supreme powers to control the natural elements. The user can also create and transform their body into that natural element. These natural elements include fire, magma, smoke, sand, ice, etc.
The transformation of the logia fruit users makes their whole body intangible. A normal person can’t touch a logia devil fruit user let alone fight them. But Haki users can use their ability to fight them. If you are not aware of the concept of Haki in One Piece, check out the linked article.
The Logia devil fruits are considered to be ones that give massive powers, thus, their rarity in the world makes sense. For example, Portgas D. Ace, the previous Mera Mera no Mi devil fruit user, was able to control fire at will, produce powerful fire attacks, and transform his own body.
You can easily distinguish Paramecia devil fruit from the other types. Paramecia is the most common type of devil fruit among the three. To put it simply, unlike Zoan and Logia, it provides bizarre superpowers to its users. These powers include the ability to manipulate their bodies, change the environment or people around them, and even objects. For example, Whitebeard’s Gura Gura no Mi allowed him to create quakes (rumbling vibrations), and Buggy the Clown’s Chop-Chop Fruit allowed him to split his body into pieces.
Undetermined Devil Fruits
There are a few devil fruits in the anime whose type is yet to be confirmed. These devil fruits come under the undetermined devil fruits section. Some of them are Blackbeard’s crew member Laffitte’s devil fruit and the revolutionary army’s commander Karasu’s devil fruit. We hope that they will be confirmed soon in the upcoming manga chapters.
Total Number of Devil Fruits in One Piece
Though there are nearly 200 devil fruits in the franchise, the total number of devil fruits that have been shown in the One Piece universe is 144 (only canon). The accurate numbers of each devil fruit type are as follows:

In some rare cases, the devil fruits can be awakened as well, which results in increasing the powers of the users drastically. The awakening of the devil fruits gives the user godly powers and abilities to do anything that seemed impossible in the beginning. The users can bend reality to their own will, in short.
Now, many of you might be wondering, how does devil fruit awakening happen? Well, Doflamingo first mentioned devil fruit awakening in the Dressrosa arc. He also mentioned that this ability awakens rarely and begins to affect things other than the user’s body. According to Kaido, when a devil fruit user reaches the point where their mind and body are in sync with their abilities, the awakening happens. It seems that devil fruit user can awaken their devil fruit in a near-death experience. For example, Luffy awakened his devil fruit powers on the verge of his death. More information about the awakening is being revealed slowly, so we have to wait a little more to understand the full concept behind them.
Drugs can be used to enhance the powers and performance of devil fruit users. So far, we have only seen Zoan devil fruit users employ any drugs in the One Piece world. Tony Tony Chopper was the first person we saw use drugs to enhance his abilities. He created a special drug called “Rumble Ball” while working with Dr. Kureha that temporarily enhanced the powers of his devil fruit.
However, thanks to his training and the assistance of Caesar, Chopper was able to create a rumble ball that would last 30 minutes with the only side effect of turning into a small person. His training also allowed him to access advanced forms (except the monster form) without using a rumble ball. The only person other than him to take drugs to alter the effects of devil fruit is Black Maria. She used drugs to change the appearance of her Devil Fruit’s Human-Beast hybrid form. But for the time being, the information about the drug and its relation to rumble ball is unknown.
The devil fruit brings the user tons of advantages as well as some disadvantages. As Thanos (From Marvel) says, “perfectly balanced as all things should be“. Here are the pros and cons of devil fruits in One Piece:
Advantages
- The most important advantage of devil fruits is their ability to grant superhuman powers. There are various powers ranging from attacking, defending, and even healing powers. A few devil fruits can also cure an incurable disease of the user. For example, Ope Ope no Mi.A devil fruit can’t weaken a user (as mentioned by Rob Lucci). It also depends on the user to make use of his devil fruit powers to the fullest.
Disadvantages
- It gives the user the inability to swim. Even if they possess the strongest devil fruit in existence, drowning in seawater can easily kill them. The devil fruits are said to taste very bad, as we mentioned above.Seastone can be used to sap the Devil Fruit user’s energy and negate their abilities.Only a little information about devil fruits is available at the moment, but we are uncovering its secrets with each new manga chapter. The success rate of anartificial devil fruit is only 10%, which means that those who did not receive powers will also lose their ability to swim and express negative emotions. They were only seen smiling and laughing all the time, regardless of the situation.
