While Nintendo continues its quest to ensure there more of its products in your house than are actually people, the Nintendo Switch has reached another milestone.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa gave an update on the Switch Online service during a corporate management policy briefing.
Furukawa confirmed during the briefing that the Switch now has 15 million paid memberships. However, he went on to address certain users by saying
News recently came out that the Switch has sold over 52 million units to date, surpassing the Xbox One, a console that released four years prior. Those numbers could make a company board member tap dance on their mother, but when you look at the paid memberships, only about 28% of users are subscribing.
Nintendo May Need to Switch Up Their Tactics
Nintendo may have an uphill battle in today’s market with a subscription service for virtually anything you can put in a box. Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus are $60 a month and that’s before accounting those who use streaming services such as PS Now or Netflix.
Those consoles already have ecosystems of users building achievements, trophies and digital catalogs over the years. Not to mention to a larger pool of online games to play like Rainbox Six Siege and Apex Legends. Nintendo has historically focused on single-player and local multiplayer games which makes the appeal of buying into an online service that much less enticing.
