Just in case you were for some reason worried that the insanely popular Super Smash Bros. series would end on the Wii U, you can finally be put at ease: there will indeed be a Super Smash Bros. game on the Nintendo Switch.
Speaking in a Facebook Live interview, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime practically confirmed that the series will continue onto the handheld/console hybrid:
“Smash is obviously one of our best-selling franchises,” he said. “What we say is that the philosophy that Nintendo has from a development standpoint is that for every platform, we want to have at least one (each) of our classic franchises.”
That could spark hope for people wanting a new entry in the Metroid franchise as well, which has been mostly dormant for the past few years. Back on the subject at hand, though, even if Nintendo hadn’t already been pumping out one Super Smash Bros. per console generation since the Nintendo 64 already, Fils-Aime’s statement should encourage Nintendo fans who enjoyed the Nintendo 3DS version of the game and want to engage in wireless multiplayer with other Switch owners they encounter in the wild.
The Switch, which launched on March 3rd, has been selling well in the US, UK, and Japan, and Fils-Aime says it’s the fastest-selling Nintendo console of all time.
