During the live stream event for NieR Replicant remaster, Square Enix announced that it is currently working with the series creator Yoko Taro for a “completely new” project, according to Japanese gaming site Games Talk (via Gematsu). Nier series producer Yosuke Saito is appointed as the producer, and Yoko Taro is chosen as the creative director. This new game is planned to be released as an “indie-like” download-only title with a possibility for special edition physical release. Other than that, further details are still unknown.
Yoko Taro said that he has trouble explaining what the game is supposed to be about. When describing it, he can only explain it through these four sentences:
- “It’s a bit of a strange game, and I’ve created something mysterious that I have no idea how to sell,”
- “It’s a game that feels off,”
- “I like it,”
- “I want people to play it, but I have no idea how to get them to play it.”
Meanwhile, Saito and the rest of the development team are more confident about the potential of this project. Saito said the game that they’re working on feels “nostalgic, but fresh.” The other staff said that they are sure that it is going to “sell really well.” Late last year, both Saito and Taro have actually announced that they’re working on two different game projects, but it’s not known whether they’re connected with this new announcement or not.
