Out of the blue, Netflix Portugal revealed a new Resident Evil movie coming in 2021, titled Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. This seems to be a completely new CG movie that stars Resident Evil 2 main characters, Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. The 53-second long trailer also shows an unidentified character, but other than that, there is nothing much that we can look into. While other Netflix Twitter accounts haven’t posted the trailer as this article is being written, Netflix Portugal hasn’t taken down the tweet either. Watch it below before it’s gone.
[Update: Netflix has officially announced the movie]
Considering its CG nature, Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness shouldn’t be confused with another Resident Evil series Netflix is working on. The new Netflix live-action adaptation hasn’t got a name but supposedly will star the “Wesker kids” who moved to New Raccoon City and uncover secrets that might “just be the end of everything”. This new live-action series will be eight, one-hour episodes and helmed by Andrew Dabb, who has worked on Supernatural. While Bronwen Hughes, who has worked on other popular series such as The Walking Dead and The Journey Is the Destination will direct the first two installments.
One thing to note, this could be one of Capcom’s projects for the Resident Evil 25th Anniversary celebration that’ll begin on March 21, 2021. So it definitely aired too early. Before this, Capcom has made three CG movie spinoffs of Resident Evil:
- Resident Evil: Degeneration, released in 2008 starring Leon and Claire.
- Resident Evil: Damnation, released in 2012 starring Leon, Chris, and Ada.
- Resident Evil: Vendetta, a 2017 movie starring Leon, Chris, and Rebecca.
