Netflix is moving forward with not one but two sequels to Red Notice with all the cast returning. Both Red Notice 2 and 3 have been greenlit by the streamer and are planning to shoot back-to-back. Stars Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, and Gal Gadot are all set to return for the upcoming sequels, with Rawson Marshall Thurber returning to pen the scripts.
Red Notice is directed by Thurber and stars Johnson as an FBI agent and Reynolds as an art thief who reluctantly teams up in order to find an ancient artifact before Gadot’s character, another legendary art thief. The film marks the third collaboration between Thurber and Johnson, who previously worked together on Skyscraper and Central Intelligence. The project was originally a Universal production; however, the studio reportedly backed out after seeing the massive budget.
The action-heist thriller didn’t strike a chord with critics, but it has been immensely successful for Netflix in terms of viewership. With a $200 million budget, Red Notice is easily the most expensive project that Netflix has invested in, and so far, the investment has paid off. According to Screen Rant, the film needed to bring around 70 million viewers in its first 28 days. The project ended up exceeding this milestone very quickly as it brought 364 million hours of viewership in that same time. Sequel talks had already been underway, and producer Hiram Garcia said there were already sequel ideas in the works in case the film was a hit.
If the Red Notice sequels end up shooting back-to-back, this will be the third action franchise to shoot sequels consecutively. Other franchises doing this are John Wick: Chapter 4 and 5 and Mission: Impossible 7 and 8. Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, along with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, also had back-to-back shoots.
Audiences seemed to enjoy this team-up between 3 of the biggest Red Notice cast stars, and it doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon as Netflix is doubling down on this franchise. Red Notice 2 and 3 don’t have a timetable for release, but lookout for more information as these projects are further developed.
