Netflix has released the official trailer for season five of The Crown, which will serve as the second to last season of the acclaimed series. This season will take place during the 1990s, a decade riddled with various challenges for the royal family. Some of those challenges are hinted at in the trailer for The Crown season five, including the 1992 fire and the various scandals that made Queen Elizabeth II refer to the year as “annus horribilis,” meaning  a “horrible year.” We will also face the family facing scrutiny from the press, with reporters and media outlets calling out the family’s damaged reputation and the crisis they are in.

Princess Diana is the Highlight of ‘The Crown’ Season 5 Trailer

The highlight of this trailer for Netflix’s The Crown season five is the internal battle between Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and the rest of the family. BuzzFeed details some of the issues in question, such as Prince Charles (Dominic West) wanting a divorce, Diana being a figure of scrutiny, the pressure she is under to support the family and keep quiet, and her decision to ignore that rule and publish a book that undermines the prince’s support and reveals the cracks in the House of Windsor. While the family attempts to set “an example of idealized family life,” Diana has no intention of letting the inner turmoil be a secret.

‘The Crown’ Season 5 Faces Criticism

Due to the intense nature of this era, there is some concern that The Crown is sensationalizing the drama for views. Dame Judi Dench called the show an “inaccurate and hurtful account of history” and called for Netflix to add a disclaimer to the series. Dench has gotten some clap back for her statements, with Joy Behar of The View saying that this show is not a documentary and that the writers are using history as inspiration.

The Crown season five trailer is the first time we see the new cast in action, including former Harry Potter villain Imelda Staunton as the Queen. The new season will release on Netflix on November 9th.
