Arne Meyer of Naughty Dog responded to the fans, explaining that no resources have been taken away from the single player experience for multiplayer in The Last of Us.

“We don’t approach multiplayer in any of our games as tacked on,” said Meyer.  “We also always have seperate teams working on the different components so that we can maintain full focus on making single player and multiplayer up to our standards.”

Multiplayer isn’t an entirely new concept for the teams at Naughty Dog.  The developer introduced multiplayer in Uncharted 2, and increased their focus on this component in Uncharted 3.  Despite growing the game mode significantly for the last Uncharted release, there was no drop off in quality of the Uncharted 3 single player campaign.

The developers haven’t released any details about what to expect from multiplayer in The Last of Us, but with the recently revealed May release date looming, it shouldn’t be long now.
