Mortal Kombat developers NetherRealm have confirmed that they have finished developing Mortal Kombat 11 and will be moving onto its next project. Mortal Kombat 11 was released in 2019 and had a total of two Kombat Packs and an epilogue story expansion called Aftermath. Acting as the finale for the retelling of the original story that started in MK9, MK11 begins the next phase in the canon timeline. The official Mortal Kombat 11 Twitter account explained in a tweet that the studio is moving on from MK11, prompting fans to speculate about the next title. NetherRealm’s other franchise, Injustice, is currently what many believe will be the next game and resulted in Injustice 3 to trend. However, according to GameInformer, another entry in the DC fighting game may not be next, but a Marvel fighting game could be.

NetherRealm is now focusing on its next project and after more than two years of supporting Mortal Kombat 11, DLC for the game, including characters, has come to an end.

Series creator Ed Boon has been teasing through Twitter that he is jealous of director James Gunn for directing Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming Suicide Squad (Marvel and DC properties, respectively.) Though the studio has worked with DC on both Injustice games and the DC vs. Mortal Kombat game, reports from those close to the studio indicate that Marvel is next on the docket. Parent company WB Games is currently looking for a new home as AT&T (which owns WB Games) plans to sell the WarnerMedia division that houses its game studios. AT&T also owns DC Comics, which is why Injustice was able to happen in the first place. If the reports are true, then it is entirely feasible that NetherRealm’s next game is Marvel-related.

Marvel hasn’t had an AAA-level fighting game since the less than stellar Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite in 2017. With a suite of expert combatants like Black Panther, Moon Knight and Daredevil, the potential for a great game is there. Moreover, many in the Marvel universe rely on gear to enhance or create powers. NetherRealm’s gear system fits this perfectly. The developer could outfit Spider-Man with different web-shooters or have different versions of Venom based on the host. Nevertheless, it’s hard not to get excited to think about what the Mortal Kombat 11 developer does next.
